The curtains are up at the 2014 Auto Show and the first launches are from Maruti Suzuki. Maruti has two new offerings for us for the 2014 Indian auto market and they are a compact SUV based on the SX4, the SX4 Cross and the much awaited replacement for the SX4, the Ciaz executive sedan. Our ICB team are on site at Delhi and have got a first look at these vehicles.
With the growing compact SUV segment and Ford with its Eco Sport can’t even keep up with the orders, Maruti has unveiled the SX4 Cross based on the SX4 sedan platform. The car is similar to that of the European version and has a received a maximum five star NCAP crash rating making it very safe with the passenger fatality greatly reduced in the event of an accident.
The SX4 S-CROSS on display here at the Auto Expo has an all new 4WD system which Maruti calls ALLGRIP 4WD. The system offers four driver-selectable driving modes for better performance and safety under diverse conditions. The car also features a double-sided sunroof too.
The European variants have a diesel and petrol variant with the petrol being a 1.6 liter motor putting out 120 PS at 6000 RPM and healthy 156 NM of torque at 4,400 RPM. The diesel will be Fiat’s 1.6 litre MultiJet power plant outputting 120 PS at 3750 RPM and 320 NM of torque.
Both these engines are paired to a 6 speed manual box for the 2WD and 4WD variants with a CVT automatic box also up as an option.
Maruti has confirmed that it will go on sale in India soon, and it will be positioned above the Renault Duster, but below the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara sporting a price tag of around RS 15-20 lakhs.
