Mahindra is one Indian manufacturer that takes innovation very seriously and their technological prowess was on full display when it took the covers off the new XUV500, which is the first manual SUV in the world to use a hybrid diesel power-plant. The car that was on display had a transparent hood with an acrylic grille in front.
The hybrid brings together a diesel engine and Lithium-Ion battery powered motor which helps in keeping the fuel bills quite low. While the engine itself is revolutionary, Mahindra doesn’t stop there, a number of technologically advanced features like a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor have been used on the car.
The XUV500 was among the few cars that were able to register an uptrend in their sales towards the end of 2013. When even cars that were moving heavy volumes such as the Duster and Ecosport had falling sales, the XUV500 maintained its rate. With this new version, on display at Auto Expo 2014, the car is sure to be a more enticing prospect for potential buyers. The electric motor ensures low-speed assistance. Fuel economy is also going to be a big selling point.
The electric motor gets recharged through what is known as regenerative braking technology, by which the kinetic energy of the car is used to replenish the battery. Mahindra has certainly upped its game with the new XUV500. It will be interesting to see how the Indian market responds to the diesel-hybrid powerplant.
