Do You Want the 2017 Mitsubishi Expander to Launch in India?

New 2017 Mitsubishi Expander is a stylish crossover MPV that should launch in India. Here are all details on specs and prices

Mitsubishi has come up with the new 2017 Expander crossover MPV for the Indonesian market. While the new MPV made its Indonesia debut at the Jakarta Motor Show this month, we are hoping that the struggling car maker would launch this model in India as well. While the Indian MPV market isn’t really the most lucrative, there’s always room for a well-sorted model like the Maruti Ertiga and the Toyota Innova Crysta. Both these MPVs have been posting stellar sales numbers and proofs that there’s acceptance for a modern, spacious, stylish, and well-priced MPVs. If launched in India, the 2017 Mitsubishi Expander will be costlier than the Maruti Ertiga but will cost lesser than the Toyota Innova. Honestly, we don’t see a reason why the ailing car maker should not work on improving its sales performance in the Indian car market. We have already seen some brilliant products, like the Lancer, Cedia, Outlander and Pajero, and won’t mind another brilliant model. That said, Mitsubishi does make to ensure its products are more relevant to India.

2017 Mitsubishi Expander India Launch Date

Launch Date (expected) February 2018

Honestly, nothing’s official at the moment. We are just hoping (against hope) that Mitsubishi would decide to launch this MPV at the Auto Expo 2018. If nothing else, it can at least put the car on showcase to gauge public interest. Like we said, Mitsubishi has sold some brilliant cars in India. There are many who still put their money on a Pajero Sport over highly popular models like the Toyota Fortuner. This goes on to show there’s an acceptance for good Mitsubishi products.

2017 Mitsubishi Expander India Prices

Minimum Price Rs 8 Lakh
Maximum Price Rs 10 Lakh

While prices will come out only when the Expander actually makes it to India, we still feel it will have a minimum price of roughly Rs 8 lakh if and when it goes on sale here. The fully loaded model could cost close to Rs 10 lakh. With the launch of the Expander, Mitsubishi can possibly reclaim its lost footing in the Indian car market. Currently, the Japanese car manufacturer sells the Pajero Sport, which is basically a re-badged Challenger SUV, and the Montero in India. Both these products aren’t sold in the high volume segments, with at least the Montero commanding a pretty stratospheric price. The Expander can probably help the manufacturer achieve some decent volumes and increase its presence in the Indian market. There’s a pretty wide void between the Ertiga and the Innova Crysta in the MPV segment. This is exactly where Expander can prove its mettle.

2017 Mitsubishi Expander India Specifications

Engine 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol
Max Power 105 BHP
Transmission five-speed Manual, four-speed Automatic

The Expander is available only with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine in Indonesia. For India, Mitsubishi will need to launch this model with a Diesel engine. We have seen some excellent Diesel engines from Mitsubishi in the past. Hence, we won’t be surprised if the car manufacturer actually manages to find a suitable Diesel engine to plonk into this MPV.  As for the petrol model, it’s available with both a manual and a four-speed automatic transmission.
