Review: 2018 Harley Davidson Fat Boy

American Bike manufacturer Harley- Davidson is an iconic brand that invokes memories of powerful engines, wide open highways, the wind in your face and mile munching in total and absolute glorious freedom on 2 wheels. Harley-Davidson has been selling bikes in India for many years and various models have been launched and one among the top favourites of Harley riders is Fat Boy. The bike has been giving the joy of riding since launch.

2018 Fat Boy is powered by a 2-cylinder air cooled 1745 cc Milwaukee 107 series engine which churns out peak power of 65 BHP @5500 rpm and peak torque is rated at 144 Nm @3000 rpm. This unit is all about torque and oodles a lot of it courtesy the lightweight pistons which keep the refinement levels quite high without stressing out the engine. The power delivery is very constant and the bike starts making the objects on road disappear in past as you twist the throttle. Fuel delivery is taken care by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI) system. The engine is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and the wet multi-plate clutch system completes the power cycle.

As fast as this bike gains momentum, coming to a halt is an easy task thanks to the braking system provided on this one. Front brakes are 300mm disc brakes paired with a 4-piston callipers. The rear section is taken care by a 2-piston calliper paired with torque-free floating 292mm disc brakes. The Michelin Scorcher tyres provide ample grip and aid handling sufficiently. Featuring a huge 160/60 front tyre on an 18-inch wheel and rear 240/40 on an 18-inch wheel, the Fat Bob lives up to its name. ABS as standard on 2018 Fat boy.

As the name suggest Fat Boy the bike is fat and huge in size. Measuring 2370 mm in length, 990 mm in width, 1095 mm in height and wheelbase is 1665 mm. The seat is only 670 mm above the ground and the ground clearance of bike is only 115mm which suggests that if you lean the bike in corners too hard you might end up scraping the exhaust and foot pegs so ride accordingly considering it’s a cruiser and not the sports bike. All of this makes the bike’s kerb weight to a total of 305kgs.

For a bike that heavy the chassis and suspension must be in sync to take the load accordingly. Harley has taken care of this very well with providing a mild steel tubular frame and rectangular back frame to accommodate that huge tyre in the rear.

Considering the huge weight of the bike is a great handler and rider can cruise on highways all day without any glitch, just put the 6th gear and at 1800-2000 rpm the bike will cruise without any trouble. City driving is also considerable but the heat from the engine is what restricts the city riding but those 30 degree placed handlebars are easy to manoeuvre in traffic.

The analogue speed display and digital info cluster are placed on fuel tank provide all the necessary information to the rider such as fuel level, trip, odometer, distance to empty, gear indicator, fuel reserve levels, low oil levels, low battery signal, and lot more. In the previous generation of the Fat Boy, the headlamps were halogen, but the MY18 update on the new fat boy has brought more efficient and powerful LED headlights which illuminate the road in the night very well.

2018 Fat boy comes with a 19.1-liter fuel tank and with an overall consumption of 14.5kmpl combined with highway and city drive the total driving range comes out around 285 km on a full tank. But who thinks of fuel consumption when the bike gives you smiles per miles. Reserve fuel level is rated at 3.3 litres. As per our testing, the bike gave an overall mileage of 12kmpl which included a city and highway driving of 40-60 ratio respectively.

2018 Fat Boy is a great bike for those who love riding long on highways. But a price tag of INR 18.5 lakhs it is a bit of an expensive affair, to begin with, but people who know the real value of name Fat Boy will not consider any other bike considering the comfort and power of the bike which makes a perfect highway cruiser.
