89 dead due to Toyota`s unintended acceleration problem: NHTSA`s report
Toyota is going down and down, facing a lot of troubles, Recalling the faulty vehicles. Here is one more attack from the US Government on world`s largest car manufacturer. According to a report published in Washington post, There has been a total of 89 deaths till now due to Toyota`s unintended acceleration problem.
NHTSA has released a fresh report stating that 89 people have died and as many as 57 injured in the last decade, since 2000 till mid May 2010. In the same period, NHTSA has also received 6200 complaints from the customers, demonstrating the unintended acceleration problem. Earlier reports suggest that the death toll was 52, but this new report could put Toyota into deep trouble as it is already facing hundreds of state and federal lawsuits
Though Toyota has indirectly denied this report in a statement, saying that many accidents reported to NHTSA lack sufficient information to find out the true cause of the accident. Toyota has recalled more than 8 million vehicles over the same problem worldwide and paid a fine of a record $16.4 million, for its slow response to an accelerator pedal recall.
The Japanese automaker said in a statement that it,
Sympathizes with the individuals and families involved in any accident involving our vehicles. We are making an all-out effort to ensure our vehicles are safe and we remain committed to investigating reported incidents of unintended acceleration in our vehicles quickly
Toyota also said that it will continue to work in close partnership with law enforcement agencies and federal regulators with jurisdiction over accident scenes whenever requested. After this whole epic episode in US, the federal government is considering upgrading auto safety laws to stiffen potential penalties against automakers & give the government more powers to demand a recall and push car companies to meet new safety standards.
Well I would say thats a good move. What do you say?
