Alfa Romeo has revealed plans to make a high-performance engine that is tiny in size but manages to churn out a substantially high amount of punch. The new small capacity gasoline powered engine will be boosted by a turbocharger that takes the power output close to 300 bhp. According to company officials, the new engine will feature in future Alfa Romeo cars. In fact, the Alfa Romeo Giulia is slated to get the new small capacity engine.

The 1.8 litre turbocharged petrol engine put out 296 horsepower. The engine employs an all-aluminium construction with high pressure fuel injection which further improves the engine performance. The fuel injection system works at a pressure of 200 bar and could also use Multiair variable valve timing. Apart from high output, the other advantage of this engine is its lower emissions.

Future engines will have to adhere to stringent emissions norms set by the EU and this has prompted auto makers to develop new technologies to cut down on emissions and improve fuel efficiency. The new Alfa Romeo engine will meet both European EU6 and US Tier2Bin5 air pollution regulations. The 1.8 litre turbo petrol engine  is designed in such a way that it can be mounted either longitudinally or transversely depending upon the setup of the car it powers.

It is expected to debut in 2014 on the then Alfa models like the Giulia which replaces the 159. Alfa Romeo recently discontinued the 159 sedan which will be replaced by the new car in a couple of years time. Alfa Romeo is also planning to put the 4C Concept into production. The car maker unveiled the car once again at the Frankfurt Motor show in September.
