Makers of the touted Ultimate Driving Machine, BMW, have committed, what can only be referred as sacrilege in the holy grail of handling. The German carmaker will take to making front-wheel drive cars. Wipe your eyes all you want, its here to stay.

BMW chairman Dr. Norbert Reithofer said at a recent press conference that while there will be lower-emission, front-wheel-drive BMWs in the “smaller vehicle classes in the future,” BMW will continue to be a “sport-inspired brand.”BMW already makes competent front-wheel drives in the form of the MINI…err…supermini. Since BMW changed their marketing voice to ‘JOY is BMW’, all they have been doing is killjoy-esque.

Although the writing is on the wall, considering the immense handling accolades handed to its saloons Beemer may not introduce front-wheel drive to the 3, 5, 6 or 7 series. This leaves out the 1-series. A front-wheel drive will be most welcome to reduce the 1-series’ ridiculous price tag.
