2010 BMW X1 to have kung-fu genes
At a time when the auto sector is licking its wounds and limping its way to resurgence, cautious steps and cost-cutting seems to be a buzzword with the recovery process.
Bavarian auto giant BMW has hit the cost-cutting jackpot by agreeing to build its baby SUV X1, hatchback 1-series and the stretch version of the 3-series in China through a JV with the country’s Brilliance Auto.
BMW chairman and CEO Norbert Reithofer, during the Geneva Motor show, had announced that the X1 would be added in the portfolio of Beemers to be built in China. Mr. Reithofer had earlier halted the production of its stretch 3-series sedan to expand the site’s production capacity. With the off-shoring of the Beemers, the site will now be adept at taking up production of the newer models.
The X1’s compatriots and competitors, the Audi Q5 and the VW Tiguan are presently recording sales in China as direct imports but the year end will see the manufacture of these, also in China.
