The Chevy Spark goes electric, preview at the 2010 Auto Expo
The cute little car from General Motors India will get electric power come 2010 and the electric Spark will actually hit the roads sometime in 2010. Scheduled to be unveiled at the 2010 Auto Expo, the Chevrolet Spark will use the electric motor from the Reva. For this, GM India has tied up with the Bangalore based Reva Electric Corporation in a 50:50 JV for producing the Spark’s electric engine. Consumers will be able to choose between the cheaper conventional lead acid or the costlier and advanced lithium battery type.
This move will make the Chevrolet Spark the one of the first mass selling Indian cars to sport full electric power. Unlike the Reva which sells in limited numbers due to it’s relatively high price, GM India is planning to position the electric Spark within the 3.5 Lakh Rupee mark thus greatly bolstering it’s chances of being a hot seller. The launch of the electric Chevrolet Spark is expected to open the floodgates for other manufacturers like Tata, Maruti and Hyundai to introduce their own electric powered cars. Indians can safely expect a deluge of electric powered cars in the coming years. Meanwhile, keep an eye out for the electric Chevrolet Spark in the 2010 Auto Expo.
