Daimler India Opens New Test Facility At Chennai

Daimler India Commercial Vehicle unveiled its state of art test facility in Oragadam on Monday, near Chennai as a part of its strategic plan to introduce commercial vehicles in India by mid 2012.

This test facility is a part of the manufacturing unit which is under construction at Oragadam, where DICV`s trucks will be rolled out. Company will invest nearly 4400 crores in next five years according to the MoU signed with the Tamil Nadu Government three years ago.

The 3-lane Test Track runs 1.55 kilometers on the outer track, equipped with a noise pad and a jump section. The inner track runs 1.16 kilometers and includes a bump track, pothole testing and articulation sections. Other facilities include a water trough, an inspection ramp and a control tower. Tests facilities such as grade-ability and steering are being planned for subsequent implementation.

“Response from customers and on-road performance reports of our vehicles rolled out from Pune plant revealed that it will not be possible to continue with the operation of bringing a vehicle model from somewhere else to this country since the customer requirement and circumstances under which our vehicles had to be operated here defied our calculations”, Mr. Marc Llistosella said while addressing a press conference at Oragadam on Thursday.“Keeping in mind the Indian customers’ need for high-quality and reliable trucks, we are confident that we will fully meet their expectations with our products. Our trucks offer high quality and an outstanding price:performance ratio. Our new test track, which is one-of-a-kind in South Asia, is an important step towards ensuring this commitment,” adds Llistosella.

The global leader in heavy commercial vehicle will be producing light, medium and heavy duty trucks from the 400 acre facility. The testing of trucks has already started. This is big building block towards opening new market and growth opportunities in South Asia while it has global presence over America and Europe.
