Japnese Automaker Nissan’s counterpart Datsun has released the first teaser of their new product Datsun Cross, a new ‘compact crossover’. The company will unveil the new model in Jakarta, Indonesia on 18 January 2018.
The Datsun Cross is the production version of the Datsun Go Cross Concept that was unveiled at Auto Expo 2016. The concept hinted an entirely new crossover. However, while the production may look similar from the front, it will likely have substantial differences from other angles.
The teaser images reveal that the Datsun Cross is not an entirely new crossover, but just a jacked-up, off-road styled derivative of the Datsun Go+ MPV. It gets its rugged styling from features like high-positioned fog lamps, aggressive bumpers, black body cladding, silver skid plates and black roof rails.
Like the Datsun Go+, the Datsun Cross will offer seats for seven people. The 1.2 liter petrol engine, lifted from the Go and Go Cross is likely to be standard on the new vehicle. This engine produces 67 Bhp of peak power and 104 Nm of peak torque, and is sold with a 5 speed manual gearbox. A CVT automatic gearbox is already available as this engine also powers the Nissan Micra, which gets the CVT option.
For the Indian market, it remains to be seen of Nissan and Datsun add a diesel engine to the Go Cross. SUV buyers in India predominantly opt for diesel powered SUVs and it will be interesting to see if Datsun takes a petrol-only approach on the Go Cross. The Go-Cross, which will be built on the Nissan V platform, can support a diesel engine if needed as the Micra (also based on the V-Platform) used to be offered with the 1.5 liter K9K diesel.
So far, none of the Datsun cars sold in the India – the Go, Go+ and RediGO has been offered with diesel engines. Will this change with the Go Cross? We’ll have to wait for the Auto Expo to find out.
