In a classical case of motorsport technology trickling down into ‘everyday’ cars, Ferrari has unveiled its first KERS powered hybrid GT car – the Ferrari 599 GTB, at this week’s Geneva Motor Show.

The system first made its way into the public through the 2009 Formula 1 season which featured cars with the Kinetic Energy Recovery System or KERS. The system stores up energy normally lost to the flywheel on braking and use it to power a lithium-ion battery. The power from the battery can be harnessed at the push of a steering-mounted button.

This system is a mild adaptation of the word hybrid and is definitely not meant to outdo a Prius (thank god for that). Through this system, Ferrari hopes to increase the 599’s paltry 8.7 mpg fuel economy to a little less paltry 13.8 mpg.
