GM Shutting Down Hummer Brand, Clearance Sale Begins For 2200 Left Hummers

The massive Hummer which has ruled the roads and undoubtedly the off-roads is set to be a part of the history. GM has decided to shut the brand after 9 months of negotiations with various companies. It had almost reached an agreement with the Chinese automaker Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery which failed to receive Chinese government approval in February.

Jim Bunnell, GM’s general director of network support, spoke with the 153 dealers across U.S. to convey the horrific news. Hummer CEO Jim Taylor has retired, with immediate effect, Hummer spokesman Nick Richards said.

The car had played a vital role for the American Army in the 1990s during the Pursian Gulf War or as we know it, The Dessert Storm and in 2005 in Iraq. The car began its journey as a project to replace the ageing jeep for the American armed forces. High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) or Humvee as it was called by the soldiers codenamed M998.

The initial production of the civilianized M998 under the brand Hummer was done by AM General which was later on taken over by GM in 1998. The first model was named as the Hummer H1 Alpha and was on sale till 2006. Super star Arnold Schwarzenegger who fell in love with the car at the very first sight helped the car personally to be every sportsman’s dream machine. Hummer H1 was followed by its smaller sibling H2 which went on sale in the year 2003 with a humongous 6.0L V-8 engine. H3 was the latest and the last of the brand was to offer the general public which started production in 2006.

To clear out the remaining 2,200 new Hummers still in stock, Hummer will run incentives through the end of April. Consumers will get 0% financing for 72 months. GM is offering $4,000 off 2010 H3s and H3Ts, $5,000 off 2009 H3Ts and $6,000 on 2009 H2s or H3s. Hummer will run ads in its 20 key markets promoting consumers to buy the car.
