Soon, Indian roads to get safer by Motor Vehicle Act amendments!

Road Safety

Road Safety

If all the amendments that the Indian government has proposed actually are enforced, the Indian roads will become a much safer place to drive, ride or walk on. Here are a few notable amendments that could wide repercussions, all of the positive kind, if they are enforced stringently by the agencies concerned.

Firstly, not wearing your helmet or seatbelt will cost you a fine of INR 1,000 which is a ten fold increase from the INR 100 that was the previous fine imposed for this offense. Similarly, talking on your mobile phone while riding or driving will also attract a fine of  INR 1,000, which again is a 10X increase over the previous fine.

Coming to drunken driving, the punishment has been raised from imprisonment of one year from the existing six months. Along with that, there will be a slab based fine of up to INR 10,000 depending on the alcohol level in the blood. Finally, India will now join the developed nations in the way speed limit fines are imposed.

Instead of a flat fine for speed limits, the amendment contains different slabs of speed limit violations which will attract different fines. The government has proposed a fine of INR 1,000 fine if the speed exceeds the permissible limit by up to 10 Kph and INR 2,000 for excess speed between 10-25 Kph and INR 5,000 if it exceeds 25 Kph.

Thus, legislation is certainly getting stricter. Let’s hope that the actual enforcement on the ground actually matches the true spirit of the legislation. If that happens, Indian roads will certainly get safer.

    Aniket,

Very valid points you’ve got there. Hopefully the infrastructure also will get an equal impetus!

    Cheers,

If they are going to do that
they need to apply realistic speed limit
80kmpl on 4 lane highway is slow.
40kmpl on 100ft rd is again stupid.
max speed is different from recommended speed.
(show me a 100kmpl limit road sign anywhere in india)

Also they shld add another law,
Wrong way driving too shld attract Rs. 5000 fine
there are plenty of offenders on they Highway, they cause more risk than anyone else.

What about enforcing the law on road contractors and inspection officials?

Really friends, if roads are good then its safe, if the cops are good and committed towards their responsibility then again its safe, if the signals are working properly and kept in good condition then its safe.

These new amendments are just to make the corrupted police more richer. How come you are believing that the fine bill given by the police is original?

The richie rich will move away without paying fine using political influence. Only a middle class chap will be paying fine.

Still today a lots of places in north chennai are without roads and just with muds and sands.

    Indian roads wont get safer.
