Gimme back my Soul: Kia motors to recall 56,000 cars in U.S and Korea

Kia Sorento Diesel Hybrid Moscow Motor Show 2010

Kia - troubled souls? and Sorento's as well...

Kia and Hyundai were really aggressive in marketing and sales strategies in the U.S.A from early 2008 and it worked. They grabbed a huge market share and kept moving up the super competitive ladder of the Auto market in the U.S. The Korea based automobile major announced on Friday that they will be recalling close to 56,000 vehicles sold in the U.S and S. Korea.

The culprit for the recalls has been identified as  wire harnesses supplied by Johnson Controls for lighting in 2010 model-year Soul cars and 2011 model-year Sorento SUVs. These were improperly soldered; leading to possible electrical shorts, Kia said in a letter to U.S. safety regulators on August 30. Although there were no reports of accidents or injuries due to the issue identified in June, Kia determined that a recall was needed on August 23. In comparison to the figures in 2009, Kia sold almost double of the number till August 2010.

The U.S. recall covers 23,972 Soul cars produced from September 7, 2009, through June 8, 2010, and 11,213 Sorento vehicles built from October 23, 2009, through July 30, 2010, according to the notice filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Kia and Hyundai are also under the scanner by the NHTSA for steering defects in the 2010 model-year Soul.  NHTSA has also opened a preliminary probe into possible steering problems in the 2011 model-year Hyundai Sonata sedan, a key introduction for the automaker and its best-selling vehicle in the United States.
