The Lit Motors C-1 is not just a two wheeler with an enclosed capsule but a viable solution for future urban mobility which successfully blends agility of a motorcycle with comfort and safety of a car.
The Lit Motors C-1 gyro two wheeler will stay upright even when stopped due to a collision!
Founded in 2010 by Daniel Kim, Lit Motors currently has a team of 13 highly skilled professionals who made the C-1 possible. For starters, the C-1 is a gyroscopically balanced two wheeler whose passenger cabin accommodates two occupants.
The vehicle features patented electronically-controlled Control Moment Gyroscopes (CMGs) which are capable of generating thousands of lb-ft of torque. The CMGs enable the C-1 to lean into and out of the corners (no need for the operator to shift his/her weight like in the motorcycle) and more importantly maintain its upright position even when its stopped due to a collision!
Powering the futuristic two wheeler are hub-mounted electric motors which derive their juice from a compact 10 KWh battery pack. The company claims an impressive range of 200 miles (320 km) and a top speed in the excess of 100 miles (160 km). Acceleration from 0-100 km comes in under 6 seconds. The motors feature KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) which stores the energy in gyro flywheels.
The curvy aerodynamic passenger capsule conceals everything except the wheels. The cabin offers two seats and car-like features including a steering wheel, automatic climate control, an audio system, smartphone and Cloud connectivity, etc. Dimensionally, the C-1 takes up just as much real estate as a full-sized motorcycle.
In addition to the gyroscopic stability system, car like safety is ensured by seat belts, multiple airbags and steel reinforced chassis.
The Lit Motors C-1 is priced around USD 24,000 (around RS. 15.28 lakhs) exclusive of the applicable tax incentives. Customers who wish to own the first 500 to 1,000 units of the C-1 can make a reservation by depositing USD 2,500 now and customers who can wait longer can deposit USD 1000.
The car-like cabin features steering wheel, smartphone connectivity, airbags, seat belts, etc
The brilliantly engineered C-1 electric vehicle is just what the doctor ordered for the planet’s top metros that are getting more congested everyday.
As a toddler, those wheeled machinery fascinated me even before I knew what they’re called as! So here I'm, petrolhead by birth, Mechanical engineer by qualification and automotive journalist by profession!
