Nothing teaches like failure does. Nothing succeeds like success does. This, literally has been Mahindra and Mahindra’s saga since it first botched up a bid for JLR. Success came when Mahindra bought out the erstwhile Kinetic Engineering Limited and ever since, the Mahindra juggernaut has simply been unstoppable. Engines Engineering, the Reva electric car company, the remaining share of the Renault JV and now with it’s eyes on Ssangyong, the Mahindra juggernaut simply shows no signs of slacking it’s the frenetic pace.
According to the latest reports, the Indian utility vehicle giant seems to be training it’s guns on the iconic British sports car maker, Lotus Engineering. The news is further cemented by the fact that Mr. Anand Mahindra, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, M&M, met Lotus Cars management about two months ago and also visited Lotus manufacturing plant in Indonesia.
Lotus known to make cars with the agility of a housefly is on Mahindra’s radar for its hybrid technology expertise as the company supplies parts to the famous American electric super car maker, Tesla. It also has previously assisted Mahindra in developing improved high speed stability characteristics of the current Mahindra Scorpio SUV.
With the news of Mahindra Proton JV, Lotus entering the Indian market has become a near possibility as the Malaysian company-Proton owns Lotus. Proton bought Lotus from Bugatti when the latter went bankrupt in 1996.
Will the Mahindra behemoth swallow Lotus just like Tata did with JLR and will Indians get a taste of Brit lean muscle in the near future? Stick around as we go snooping around.
