Mahindra has announced a press conference tomorrow to discuss the development of the XUV 500 SUV. The press conference is scheduled for 25th of November this year. The press conference could be used to launch the automatic variant of the XUV 500 SUV.
The XUV 500 could get the 6-speed automatic transmission sourced from Drivetrain Systems International (DSI), Australia. This unit does duty on the automatic Scorpio as well. The automatic Scorpio is available as a 2WD or a 4WD vehicle. The other option Mahindra has is a 6-speed automatic gearbox sourced from Aisin.
Mahindra could offer the automatic transmission on the W8 variant and not just on the W10 variants so that it will be more affordable. Speaking of affordability, the automatic variants could cost INR 50,000 to INR 75,000 more than the equivalent manual variant.
The top of the line W10 variant gets projector headlamps, daytime running lights, illuminated scuff plates, electric sunroof with anti-pinch, power adjustable drivers seat, 7 inch touchscreen infotainment system with GPS, rear parking camera with assist, brake energy regeneration system, voice messaging system, fully automatic temperature control (FATC), cruise control, cruise control, steering mounted controls and rear wiper and defogger. For safety, the SUV gets six airbags, electronic stability programme (ESP), hill descent, hill hold control, anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) and four disc brakes.
The XUV 500 is powered by a 2.2 litre, four-cylinder turbocharged mHawk CRDe diesel engine producing 140 bhp and 330 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and power is sent to the front wheels. Four-wheel drive is also available. the car rides on 17-inch wheels and it returns 16 kms to a litre of fuel. The SUV can seat 7 people.
The Mahindra XUV 500 competes against the Tata Safari Storme, Renault Duster, Hyundai Creta and the upcoming Honda BR-V. It starts at INR 11.47 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi) and goes up to INR 16.37 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The Creta gets an automatic transmission while the Duster will be getting an AMT automatic transmission with the facelift. Honda might offer its 7-seater SUV with an automatic as well.
