Mercedes Benz SLS AMG F1 Safety Car unveiled

SLS AMG Safety Car

SLS AMG Safety Car

Bernd Maylander is one man who we all have begun to envy a lot. As the F1 Safety Car driver he has quite an engaging job to take care of. We can imagine him hitting a pub after the race and wooing hotties with the line, “Yeah, Button and Alonso were reading my rear number plate and breathing the exhaust all the way”.

Other than his chance to lead a pack of F1 race cars and their champion drivers, it’s the safety car itself which makes this guy’s job so much enviable. For the last two seasons the Mercedes Benz SL63 AMG was doing the neat job of the official Safety Car. The time has come for a replacement and the new car is another stunner. The SLS AMG gets the tough yet satisfying task and with 571 thoroughbred horses ready to gallop under the hood, we believe the best car has been chosen.

Pretty much the entire car is stock with the tailpipe being the only upgrade. The rest of the car is exactly the same as the one you can buy off the shelf. Engine, suspension, carbon-ceramic brakes – they remain untouched. However you won’t find it difficult to distinguish it from the standard car. The F1 logos flashed all over the car, the carbon fibre hood with the front mounted camera and the rear number plate with embedded camera are the minor upgrades incorporated into the super car.

Who can miss that aerodynamic light bar on the roof which defines the purpose of the car? Those very lights make F1 drivers cringe in their cockpits and cross their fingers hoping that the lights and the car clear the path.

We have a word of advice for Bernd. Do keep your helmet on while you get in and get out of the car. The gullwing door isn’t so much head-friendly.
