According to the sales figures of BMW India, thanks to an aggressive marketing strategy and badge value, BMW has managed to wrest the numero uno slot from fellow fatherlander, Mercedes-Benz. Not one to take bad news, Mercedes launched an offensive announcing that sales have grown 157% after selling a total of 842 units in Jan-Feb 2010.

Mercedes-Benz India managing director and CEO, Wilfried Aulbur, in a statement made in Mumbai, said “So far, we have registered a good start to the year 2010 and February sales have been encouraging.”

Mercedes introduced petrol and diesel variants of its E-class models in India, the E 250 V6 and E 250 CDI to the existing line-up of E 350 and E 350 CDI. Later it introduced the S-Guard model especially designed for the bureaucrats and top professionals asking for security vehicles. Mercedes also introduced C 250 in line with C 220CDI and the C 2000 Kompressor.

With BMW slating the 330i for release soon, it looks like the German civil war has found its way to India.  We see an ensuing no-holds-barred battle once Audi and VW get set.
