New 2018 Maruti Swift arrives in India

The Maruti Swift is one strong and a very popular vehicle. With the competition stepping up, Maruti has to do something quick with the Swift as well. Globally, the all-new Swift was introduced in December. Here are the first images of the new 2018 Maruti Swift that has made its first appearance in India.

The example in the images appears to be that of the JDM-spec Suzuki Swift brought in for study or demo. Visually, the car is identical to the Hybrid SL variant sold in Japan and features a ‘Hybrid’ badge on the boot lid. It also gets the blue accent on the gear selector which is unique to the Swift Hybrid variant. Power comes from a 1.2 L K12C petrol engine paired with a 10 kW Motor Generator. It has a maximum output of 91 PS and 118 Nm. One of the pictures of the interior reveals that this particular example has an automatic transmission. According to the specifications listed on the official Suzuki website for Japan, it features a 5-speed AGS.

The Pure White Pearl finished Swift gets projector headlamps with LED DRLs, front fog lamps, LED tail lamp detailing and alloy wheels. The cabin features an all-black treatment. There’s a centrally mounted touchscreen unit, automatic climate control, and a multifunction steering wheel, Apple Car Play, Android Auto and a start/stop button.

Maruti is planning to stick to the same 1.2-liter petrol and the 1.3-liter diesel engines, however, they will be faster due to the lower weight the new vehicles possesses. For the first time ever, the Swift will come equipped with an automatic transmission, which will widen the appeal of the car. Like the Ignis and the Dzire, we expect the new Swift to be coming with an AMT on both the petrol and diesel versions, which means that it will have a wider appeal. Seeing this hybrid version does give an indication that the company may bring this in as well in the long run.

The new Swift has been designed as a sporty offering and will be the same in India. The chassis and the suspension setup has been done in such a way that it is more sporty. Unlike previously where the Swift was the company’s flagship hatchback in the country, they now have the Baleno to take care of that and they can use the Swift to look into the sporty side of things. Suzuki introduced the Swift Hybrid globally earlier in the year with a claimed fuel economy figure of 32 kmpl in the Japanese market. It is powered by a 1.2-litre engine making 89 Bhp and is mated to a 10 kW electric motor which powers only the front wheels. The engine is mated to an AMT gearbox.

The Swift will be sold through the company’s normal dealerships instead of the Nexa. The new 2018 Maruti Swift will arrive early next year. It is expected to make its debut in India at the Auto Expo scheduled to start February 9, 2018. Prices of the new Swift are likely to fall in the INR 5.00-8.00 lakh range.
