Nissan India has just announced a hike in the prices of the Micra small car. The hike will be applicable to both Petrol and Diesel version and will be in the range ofRs. 2,500 (0.5%) to Rs. 11,170 (2%) with effect from April 11th, 2011.

Commenting on the increase in prices of the Nissan Micra, Mr. Kiminobu Tokuyama,M.D. & CEO, Nissan Motor India said, “There has been a steady increase in the input cost over a period of time. It has come to a situation now that the price hike isinevitable and we have decided to increase the price of Micra.”

The Micra has failed to generate great sales for the Japanese automaker in India from the start. As is it is, the Micra has been overpriced compared to the competition it is facing in India. Now with the price rise, it would make it harder for Nissan dealers to sell the Micra as it is not that you get more for the high price either.

The competition too provides the same features at a fairly competitive price than that of the Nissan Micra. We expect, sales of the Micra to dip even further with this price hike coming into effect. Curiously, Nissan India has not increased the price of any of it’s other Indian models. Perhaps, that has to do with them arriving into India as CBUs.

You are very right in saying that the price hike will see the sales of Micra dip further…maybe it will touch its lowest ebb in the coming months. I rather buy a Fiesta Classic which is more powerful and peppy for the same price. Tell me one reason why I should prefer Micra to Fiesta Classic.

Good luck Nissan India with the sales of Micra.
