Peugeot 208 India launch not in the offing but a spy mule seen testing for data logging purposes. Peugeot India launch expected to happen in 2020. Here are all the details
In an interesting development, a Peugeot 208 hatchback has been caught testing by the guys at CarBlogIndia. This sighting has happened months after Peugeot Société Anonyme (PSA), which was earlier known as the PSA Peugeot Citroën, got into a tie up with CK Birla Group for its soon to launch Indian operations. While the Peugeot 208 India launch is not in the offing, the Peugeot 208 that has been spied testing was probably being used for data-logging purposes. For the record, Peugeot will commence its Indian operations only by 2020.
Peugeot 208 India Launch Prospects
While it’s true that PSA has been testing the 208 in India, it’s pretty much for sure that this car isn’t coming to India. The latest generation Peugeot 208 made its debut back in 2012 and has already been through a mid-cycle refresh. The car that has been spied here is the facelift, which is already on sale in many markets abroad. The 208 will be replaced by an all new model that will come next year. Hence, it really makes no sense for Peugeot to commence its Indian operations with a dated model. The 208 has been testing in India along with other models like the 2008 and 3008. However, out of these three, only the 3008 is likely to launch in India. The 208 and 2008 are fairly dated in India nad hence, won’t make it to our market.
Peugeot is planning to establish a production facility in India. This facility will cater not just to India but also to demands arising from SAARC countries and markets like that of Japan and Korea. Currently, the European car maker has no production facility in this side of the world. Hence, the upcoming plant in India will be of great importance to the manufacturer. This production plant will be responsible for the manufacturing of the upcoming generation of cars. Keeping all this in mind, it’s pretty clear that the 2008 and the 208 won’t make it to Indian car market.
Peugeot 208 Specifications
Internationally, the Peugeot 208 is available with three engine options, with all the three being petrol models. Out of these three, two are naturally aspirated while one is a turbocharged engine. The smallest of these is a 1.0-litre three cylinder naturally aspirated engine that has a max. power of 68 PS. Then there are two four-cylinder 1.2-litre engines with a max. power of 82 PS and 110 PS respectively. The most powerful engine is of course the turbocharged model. All the three engines are known for their high average fuel mileage and low emssions. In certain markets there’s also a 1.6-litre HDI Diesel engine that’s again low on emsisions and high on power and mileage.

1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel with a max. power of 100 PS
The car that has been spied testing is the 1.0-litre model. The source of these spy images goes on to claim that Peugeot is testing at least three units of the 208. We are pretty sure that the remaining two models are the 1.2-litre engine variants. The 208 has won many accolades for its low emissions and reasonably high fuel mileage and power. While this car is surely not launching in India, it’s basically a mid size hatchback that goes on to rival cars like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Hyundai Elite i20. While some of you might be wondering the reason for the testing of this car in India, let us assure you that it is a common practice for manufacturers to test components in the challenging India road conditions.

Peugeot India Launch Details
Peugeot is now planning to commence its second innings in the Indian car market. Earlier the manufactuer came to India in a joint venture with the Premier Automobiles. This collaboration ended in 2001 and it is then that the manufacturer decided to completely exit our country. A decade later, in 2011, the European car company once again tried to launch its ars in India by setting up a manufacturing facility at Sanand. The company even earmarked an investment of Rs. 4,000 crore for this production facility. However, the plan was called off due to various financial troubles the company was marred with. Finally, this year, the company announced its plans to launch in India in partnership with the CK Birla group.
This time around, the French auto maker plans to invest as much as Rs 700 crore in setting up a vehicle and powertrain production facility in Tamil Nadu. Also, as per the agreement, the Indian partner of the PSA Groupe will help the French carmaker with distribution and retail of passenger cars in India. PSA is the majority stakeholder in this joint venture.
