Rajiv Dube Resigns from Tata Motors; May Join Mahindra and Mahindra

Rajiv Dube, Head of passenger car business unit, who gave his 27 years to Tata Motors has resigned from the company  and speculations are that he may soon join the biggest rival of Tata`s i.e Mahindra and Mahindra.

This news has come as a shock to the whole industry, as he was being considered for bigger responsibilities. No one in the industry expected him to take such a move when he was flying high in the company.

Mr Dube joined the Tata Group in 1983, began his career in the manufacturing operations of Tata Motors at Jamshedpur. Later in 1990, he joined the Tata Administrative Services. He was reassigned to Tata Motors in 1998, when the passenger car division was formed. In 2005, he became the senior vice-president of the passenger car business. Since 2006, he served as Vice President of Passenger Car Business of Tata Motors Ltd till 17th May 2010 when his resignation was officially accepted. He also serves as Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors at Advertising Standards Council of India.

He is the second high profile executive to exit Tata Motors, five years back Dr V. Sumantran also quit as Executive Director from the company over some internal conflicts and joined Nissan.  Mr. Dube has played instrumental role in in the growth of the company in the passenger car segment. Launch of  Indica, Indigo, Nano and the Manza are some of the Tata`s major launches in his tenure.  He was a part of core team in Nano project. He has also been actively involved in the Indian operations f JLR and Fiat.

Mr S. Krishnan, Senior Vice-President (Commercial), responsible for sales and marketing has been promoted to take the charge of premier car division in addition to  his current responsibilities. The other part of Mr Dube’s portfolio will be taken care  by Mr Girish Wagh, the head of the small car project, who will take on the additional responsibility for manufacturing and product development of the entire passenger car segment, including the hatchback Indica and the Indigo and Manza. Both of them will report to PM Telang, the managing director (India operations) of Tata Motors.

Mr Dube says

“It is always tough to leave a company after 27 years. But after running the business for five years, I wanted to do something different on a wider canvas.”

Tata motors has acknowledged his contribution in a press release and wished him luck for his future career.
