Scoop of the year: Tata Motors uses the Mahindra Maxximo passenger van instead of the Tata Venture in its 2010-11 Annual General Report

Here’s something that could be the scoop of the year, and quite a hilarrious one at that. It seems someone at Tata Motors Limited has seriously goofed up. How else do you explain the Mahindra Maxximo passenger van being used repeatedly in Tata Motors’ Annual General Report of 2010-11, right under Ratan Tata’s signature authorizing the AGM report. Quite understandably, the Mahindra Maxximo passenger van looks similar to the Tata Venture, when viewed sideways but here’s the humdinger.

When a certain eagle eyed Team-Bhpian who stumbled on this error wrote to Tata Motors highlighting this goof up, someone over at Tata replied stating that the Maxximo passenger van in the AGM report is actually a Tata Venture. Also, the Mahindra Maxximo and the Tata Venture operate in completely different segments. While the Tata Venture is a more upmarket people mover with plenty of creature comforts aimed at large families, the Mahindra Maxximo passenger van is more of a passenger van aimed squarely at the commercial vehicle market.

Comparing images 1 and 2 below, a clear giveaway of Tata Motors’ annual report 2010-11 containing the Mahindra Maxximo passenger van instead of the Tata Venture is the positioning of door handles. On the Maxximo, the sliding door has the door handle on the rear while it is on the front for the Venture. Moreover, the Maxximo’s door handles feature an older, inexpensive design while the Venture’s door handles are of the contemporary pull type.

All in all, some free advertising for the Mahindra Maxximo passenger van is what Tata Motors’ inadvertent error in quite an important document, the automaker’s annual general report of 2010-11. All said, the document is no longer available for download on Tata Motors’ website as its corporate communications outfit must be working overtime to ensure that this error is corrected immediately. More power to them.

Well, for Mahindra &Mahindra, they must be having the last laugh over this matter as Mahindra has had a volley of successes throughout this year. First, Mahindra beat Tata in terms of market capitalization to become India’s most valuable automaker when the former’s share price edged out the Tata Motors stock, which has been on a downward spiral ever since.

Then came the XUV500, which has become the segment leader within weeks of its launch even as the Tata Merlin SUV’s launch has been delayed for reasons we don’t know. The Mahindra Bolero continues to outsell the Tata Sumo’s various variants in the MUV space even as the Xylo and the Scorpio lead significantly over the Grande and the Safari respectively.
