German automotive giant Volkswagen is all set to give a complete overhaul to its extremely popular global hatchback, the Volkswagen Polo.
The new 2017 VW Polo is under development and the car will be different from its predecessor in a lot many ways. Volkswagen will be focusing on giving the Polo an all new interior theme, which would be more premium than even the current generation’s, which is on sale now. A test mule of the car has now been spotted testing in South Africa, without any camouflage.
The new Volkswagen Polo will be based upon Volkswagen’s smallest platform in its MQB architecture, called the A0. The new chassis will allow the car to have an increased wheelbase by 90mm and thus offer better room inside the cabin. The current generation Polo suffers from significant lack of room for the rear passengers and the new version is expected to sort that out completely. The car however, will remain within the realms of the 4 meter length mark to keep it compact and taut.
The next generation Polo will get a sharp and distinct grille along with completely new headlamps as well. The bumpers will bear a different design language and the front ones will sport chrome garnishes for the fog lamps, thus, giving an overall premium touch on the outside.
The side profile will remain mostly clean, with just a character line running along the door handles, and blending into the rear with the tail lamps. The rear of the car also looks extremely different with a muscle line running between the tail lamps, giving the car a very masculine appeal. The rear section also looks broader than the outgoing car. The tail lamps look quite contemporary with LED elements integrated inside.
On the inside, the new Volkswagen Polo is expected to get premium soft touch interiors along with having new infotainment system, featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as built-in internet connectivity on the top variants.
On the power train front, the company is working on a host of engine options. There would be a naturally aspirated 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. Apart from this, there would be two different turbocharged editions of this same motor, tuned to produce 100 BHP and 115 BHP respectively.
Diesel engine options will include a 1.5-litre engine, outputting 90, 110 and 130 BHP of power. There will also be a 1.5-litre petrol on offer, which will produce 140 and 160 BHP of power.
The new Volkswagen Polo shall arrive in India somewhere in 2018 and how many engine options the company brings here, will only have to be seen.
