Students from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore have developed an open wheeled race car. A group of engineering students designed and built the car with an aim to participate in the Maruti Suzuki Supra SAE 2011 held at Chennai. Mr P. Vinodh Kumar and his team spent just Rs 2.5 lakh on the project and went on to win the national-level Formula-I car design competition.
The team was happy for their win at the national level design competition but were equally sad that they missed the first spot by just 5 points. Their team, Pegasus Racing won the second place in a national competition for engineering students to conceptualise, design and develop a Formula I prototype. They were awarded a cash prize of Rs 2.5 lakh for their entry and will be showcased at the Maruti Suzuki stands at the 2012 Auto Expo which will be held at Delhi.

Back in 2009 they came seventh in the FSAE Design Challenge and were since then working day-in and day-out to grab the top spot at the annual competition. Finally, their hard work paid off this time around and we hope the team would try for the top spot next year as well. As far as the car is concerned, Maruti Suzuki provided the essential bits of the powertrain unit – engine, transmission and electronic control units. The event also gave the students a chance to display their engineering skills and some have even got placed at top automobile companies like Maruti Suzuki and Bajaj Auto.
“We had been working on this since July 2010 with hardly two hours of sleep,” says an elated Mr Vinodh, who has just finished his B.E in Automobile Engineering. “We came seventh in the FSAE Design Challenge 2009 and ever since we have been working to win this,” adds the 22-year-old team leader.
