Toyota plans to introduce not one but three new electric vehicles in 2012. A company source from Toyota City-Japan has conformed on a the condition of anonymity that Toyota Motor Corp. will be expanding its electric product line-up in 2012.

After millions of recalls and countless hours of judicial proceedings, add to that the heft fines incurred, Toyota seems to be planning for the future. Demand for electric vehicles will no doubt rise in the near future and the world’s largest auto manufacturer is putting strategies in place and surely wants to be a part of the action.

Toyota Prius (plug-in version) will be here by 2012

Now, Toyota will we introducing a plug-in version of its popular Prius hybrid which will be available in dealerships across the U.S. in the first half of 2012. Under the same Prius brand, another electric car will be launched and will be similar to the current Toyota iQ.

Toyota may sell the electric vehicle only in markets that provide sufficient infrastructure to support the vehicle. It plans to track those markets’ sales and infrastructure progress on the Web site toyota.com/esq. Toyota also will launch a viral marketing campaign on that site as it approaches the launch dates of the green vehicles, the source said.
