A new engine plant takes shape even as Toyota bets massively on the ETIOS concept

Toyota Kirloskar Auto Parts has just invested close to INR 500 Crores or more than $100 Million in an engine plant that will churn out close to 52,000 engines and 1,70,000 gearboxes for the upcoming ETIOS low cost car that Toyota aims to pitch in developing markets.

Thus, the ETIOS Hatchback and Sedan which Toyota plans to launch in early 2011 in India seem to be primed to be the volume pullers for Toyota with such investments happening anticipating high sales growth in the future. What this also means is Toyota will export a chunk of the ETIOS Hatchbacks and Sedans to developing markets other than India, in a way capitalizing on India’s low cost labour.

So, while these moves will provide employment to scores of Indians living in and around Toyota’s plant in Bidadi, off Bangalore, car buyers also have plenty to cheer. As Toyota is very serious about tasting good success with the ETIOS cars, Indian car buyers can expect both the ETIOS hatchback and the sedan to be priced extremely competitively. This, along with the stellar Toyota quality coupled to the immense brand value could give the ETIOS a very good chance at the hustings. While the background seems to be solid, questions on whether the ETIOS cars live up to the growing expectations will be answered only in the coming times.
