Now, the Toyota Corolla is under the recall scanner for possible steering issues
Toyota Corolla Altis at Auto Expo 2010
The Toyota recall saga shows no sign of abating anytime too soon. The beleaguered former numero uno auto maker now is investigating possible steering issues after receiving just under 100 complaints with the power steering being the main subject of concern.
While Toyota hasn’t yet issued a recall, it could do so if it’s investigations find that a recall is warranted.
If this does happen, we could have India too coming under the recall ambit as Toyota has been selling the world’s largest selling car, the Toyota Corolla Altis, also a very popular C segment sedan in India known for it’s bomb proof reliability and quality.
For our part, we’ll contact Toyota shortly and update you as and when any news about an Indian recall breaks out as plenty of Toyota Corolla Altis customers in India are worried with this recent development.

Hi there,
I too own a altis, and I booked the vehicle much before the launch. I didnt even test drive it before booking or buying….
But at this point I would like to say that…. Our Indian Version of Altis does have the same problems as the American Version.
Just a week after I got the vehicle, I felt that the steering was a bit too soft… In the beginning it seemed okay… for the city conditions….
After I took my first long distance travel, from chennai to banglore…. I was quite impressed with the way the engine was performing… but the steering was such a big dissappointment… A perfect analagy would be ” have you ever tried balancing a bike in a stand still condition, all the balance happens by moving your weight and continuously twitching the handle bar”… a continuous twitching…. that is how I felt exactly with my steering… continuously correcting it throughout a 350 Km journey….
The steering doesnt make the driver feel secure at all… and the problem is quite evident…. I havent felt that insecure in a Maruthi 800…
I had complained about the same issue with toyota people in chennai…. and till date it is not taken seriously…. This was much before the american version problems came out…
Now we dont know and dont need to know where toyota is procuring its spares for the American and Indian versions of the car…. But definitely thats no reason to comfort the indian customers…. because the problem with the American Version and the Indian version are the same…. You can verify the same in any blog…
For having trusted a brand like toyota blindly… the least we can expect is to stop this step motherly treatment towards the indian customers…
For anybody out there who still doesnt realise what the problem is… Please go to your toyota outlet and just test drive a camry… for a change you will feel that the power steering in the camry is much better….
The next issue is with the screeching brakes… horrible… we dont need to honk… people feel the need to give way because they are under an assumption that there is a public transport bus behind them…
Instead of trying to hush hush this problem… It would do good if toyota comes out with a recall option and corrects the existing complaints…
Yes I do have the same problem. The car is very unstable and sways from left to right. It is extremely dangerous on highways.
