Toyota to set up Engine Plant in India
Amidst the Karnataka global investors’ meet in Bangalore, Toyota has expressed desire to set up an engine and R&D centre in India. Toyota Kirloskar Motor, a joint venture of Toyota Japan and Kirloskar of India, is currently operating from their plant outside Bangalore headed by Hiroshi Nakagawa, Managing Director of Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM). The company currently undertakes R&D in Japan and Thailand.
Speaking to reporters, Nakagawa said, “If we have a chance, we should establish engine facility here in India also”. Setting up of plant is a possibility only when the total annual sales reaches 200,000 units, he added.
Gearing up for the start of production of its compact car Etios, TKM is hiring 2,000 employees for its second plant, coming up at a cost of Rs 3,200 crore here.
