Volkswagen giant swallows Italdesign Giugiaro

VW Scirocco Mk1

Continuing its endeavour of swallowing up every car maker/designer/tuner in Europe, VW has scooped up yet another brand and this time it is Italy’s largest design and engineering firm – Italdesign Guigiaro S.p.A, reports Automotive News Europe. However, Italdesign and VW officials declined to comment on the affair.

In a quest to be the world’s largest automaker by 2018, VW will have to achieve sales targets of close to 10 million units a year. To meet the numbers, VW needs designers and engineers to keep up its present tempo. The firm will have introduced, through its nine brands, 60 new cars this year (including updates).

Headquartered in Moncaileri, Italdesign was co-founded by the famous designer Giorgetto Giugiaro in 1968 and currently employs 975 people and houses 800 CAD workstations.

Italdesign had previously designed VW models of yesteryear such as the iconic VW Golf Mk1, the Scirocco Mk1, the Passat Mk1, the Audis 80 and 100, the 1991 Seat Toledo and the 1993 Seat Ibiza.
