Suzuki cozies up to VW, where does this leave the Fiat Multijet Diesel engine?

Volkswagen-Suzuki Partnership

Volkswagen-Suzuki Partnership

A couple of years ago Maruti Suzuki spent considerable money and resources to set up a Fiat Multijet Diesel engine manufacturing plant at Haryana, India.

This plant currently churns out the highly acclaimed 1.3 DDiS Multijet engines that powers the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Dzire. Now, Maruti’s Japanese partner, Suzuki has been partly acquired by German car maker, Volkswagen. This obviously raises questions over Suzuki’s tie up with Fiat for diesel engines as Volkswagen is a global leader in diesel engine technology.

In a bid to control costs and rationalize synergies, Suzuki will use diesel engines from Volkswagen. So, apart from the 1.3 DDiS Multijet Diesel from Fiat, Maruti Suzuki could gradually move on to Volkswagen diesel engines for it’s future offerings like the D segment sedan, Kizashi.

This could also mean that future models of the Swift and Dzire could get Volkswagen diesel engines. Also, the Maruti Suzuki’s diesel manufacturing plant in Manesar could soon be revamped to manufacture Volkswagen Common Rail and Pump Dusse diesel engines.
