Toyota Kirloskar Motors India came along to India, ten years ago, with the most puzzling launch, which many industry pundits sneered at, the Toyota Qualis MUV. Most folks were puzzled as to why Toyota, in spite of having a range of fine, globally best selling models like the Corolla and the Camry actually chose to enter India with the Toyota Qualis. A breadbox on four wheels, the Qualis singlehandedly propelled Toyota into the hearts and garages of many Indians, leaving competitors like Tata Motors with it’s Sumo, floundering and stunned. Toyota Qualis, though never looked contemporary even in it’s day, managed to win hearts with the stunning quality levels and bomb proof reliability, exhibited by both the 2.4 Liter IDI Diesel engine as well as the entire MUV as a package. It is is of little wonder then, that the Qualis was loved by both the family as well as the cabbie crowd and it isn’t too unusual for Toyota Qualis models clocking more than half a million miles under the most trying Indian condition munching miles happily with nothing more than the regular oil and oil filter changes.
