Volvo S60 Crashes During Safety Demonstration: Collission Warning Systems Fails

This is indeed very difficult to answer now, a lot of people believe Volvo makes the safest cars in the world and that includes me. Since Safety has been the unique selling point of Volvo, the company proudly announced a public demonstration of the new safety features of its S60 and invited journalists to watch the amazing thingy. Unfortunately, the event turned out to be a bad luck and the car crashed into a truck.

Let me tell you about the “Collision warning with auto brake”  first. This system automatically brakes the car if there is an imminent risk of a collision with a moving or stationary object , Volvo writes about the collision avoidance system.

The system starts by alerting the driver and preparing the braking system for emergency braking. If the driver does not respond despite the warning, the brakes are automatically applied.

During the demonstration, the car should have detected the upcoming collision threat and the automatic brakes should have stopped the car. But that did not happen, instead the car crashed into the truck.

Now about the car, All new Volvo S60 comes loaded with tons of safety features like city safety, the company’s third-generation of collision warning and an optional pedestrian safety system that uses a camera and radar system. This system recognizes people (up to 10 at a time, distinguishing the nearest threats) and will bring the car from up to 25 mph to a dead stop to avoid a collision even if the driver doesn’t step on the brakes. At higher speeds the car will slow down as much as possible to reduce the potential injury to the pedestrians. Sounds as the safest car right??

A 3.0-liter turbocharged I6 powers the car pumping 300 hp and 325 lb-ft.  Mated is a six-speed automatic Transmission which delivers the power to all four wheels. An 18-inch wheels and a seven-inch touch-screen entertainment system with steering-wheel-mounted controls comes standard in the car. S60 also features connectivity for Bluetooth, plus Sirius satellite and HD radio.

There are a lot of optional features too, a premium package which costs $1500 includes a power moon roof, power passenger seat, and dual Xenon headlights. A climate package comes for $800 in which the customer can get heated front seats and windshield washer nozzles, headlight washers, rain-sensing wipers, and an air-filtration system. The Multimedia package costs $2700 and includes navigation, a 650-watt sound system with 12 speakers, and a rear view camera.  Finally, the $2100 Technology package—we call it a safety pack—offers a full array of Volvo’s latest crash avoidance systems: pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, a collision warning and braking system, and a lane-departure-warning system.

It has been priced starting at $ 37,700 with the features probably no other sedans could give. The S60 also comes with Volvo’s full warranty plan, which includes a five-year/60,000 basic warranty, complimentary scheduled maintenance, wear-and-tear coverage, and 5 years of roadside assistance.

Though Volvo offers a lot of safety compliments but is it as safe as it says?

Its a tough time for Volvo indeed. But I guess they would have tested few S60s before going for this big one. Bad luck I can say. Volvo so far has stood up to the safety measures and features they are world famous for. This though being a glitch in it….and that too a big one….well we can say that its better they got it blown in a demonstration mode. As becoz if this was cleared and the problem would have appeared in a rolled out vehicle, then company would have to face a massive callback and would have joined they league of the rest auto giants. So I would say its better for Volvo to face it now than at the customers level.
People still feel much safe in a Volvo.
