Second Generation Fiat 1.3 Multijet Diesel Engine

Fiat’s 1.3 Multijet diesel engine is jocularly known as the national engine of India, what with the plethora of diesel hatchbacks and sedans it lends it’s services to. Internationally, Fiat has just launched the successor of this very popular, frugal and high performance diesel engine.

The new Multijet 1.3 diesel engine will retain it’s predecessor’s 1248cc cubic capacity. Well, this is where the similarity ends. The new 1.3 Multijet will pump out a very healthy 95 Bhp and 200 Nm of torque, up from 75 Bhp and 190 Nm of torque that it’s predecessor managed to put out.

Dollops of diesel power, we mean the torque, will be available from as low a rpm as 1500. Now, that will make a Fiat with the new 1.3 Multijet engine a real hoot to drive. The second generation Multijet makes use of a balanced solenoid servo valve to control fuel injection better, now managing eight injections per cycle. The new Injection Rate Shaping System optimizes combustion at higher loads. This improves emissions, economy and results in lower engine noise.

With all this tech, the new engine manages to meet Euro V norms comfortably and that obviously means that it will emit very little from it’s tailpipe while delivering very good mileage of up to 24.2 Kmpl(claimed). Fiat India haven’t made any encouraging noises about bringing this scorcher of a diesel engine to India.

While we’d love to see the 2010 Fiat Palio featuring this engine, this could take longer than expected as this engine runs on ultra low sulphur diesel which currently isn’t available in India. A shame considering the hot hatch, that car would be. Currently, the international versions of the Fiat 500 and the Fiat Punto feature this engine.
