Ford begins production of EcoBoost 1 Liter engine: More with less!
The EcoBoost series of engines from Ford is one of the major engine developments for recent market needs. Like its name suggests, the EcoBoost range of engines promise low carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emissions even as power, torque and fuel economy are dramatically better than other petrol engines in the market. EcoBoost engine technology involves the usage of turbo charging, variable valve timing and direct injection technologies to increase power and torque while reducing fuel consumption and tail pipe emissions.
The EcoBoost petrol engine technology also allows Ford to use smaller engines in place of larger ones as the EcoBoost range of engines, by means of forced induction are able to achieve higher power and torque outputs through smaller displacements. This means that the smaller engines, which weigh less also contribute to lesser overall weight of a Ford car, with the corresponding benefits like sharper handling and higher fuel economy.
Coming to the 3 cylinder, 1 liter EcoBoost engine, Ford has just begun manufacturing this engine at two locations in the United Kingdom, Dunton and Dagenham. The 1 liter EcoBoost engine will also be manufactured at Ford’s Crajova plant in Romania and will be launched in the European market in early 2012. this engine will be available in two variants, one producing 100 Bhp and while the other is capable of producing 125 Bhp and a whopping 200 Nm of peak torque.
Emissions too are kept to a minimum with the 100 Bhp unit producing 109 grams of CO2 per kilometer while the 125 Bhp unit will produce 114 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Armed with an installed capacity of 700,000 EcoBoost engines, this engine has all the trappings of becoming the next big thing at Ford given the big bet the American automaker is placing on the EcoBoost technology. These engines are soon expected to be apart of Ford’s global line up and we’re looking forward to this engine finding its way into India, as and when the Ford launches it in a new product such as the Ford Fiesta based crossover.
