Lasers to replace headlights on BMWs of the future?

As we all know, the Germans are among the most brilliant minds on this planet. They have been at the forefront when it comes to research and development of new technology. German automakers spend a big chunk of their earnings on the development of new technologies that could improve their cars and the driving experience. Research in cleaner burning engines, hybrids etc are picked-up in recent times. ‘Efficiency’, is what every manufacturer is after.
Daytime running lights have gained popularity lately and every other car maker now use LED bulbs which are more efficient and use negligible amount of energy. The Bi-Xenon lamps for the main beam of the headlight still consume a considerable amount energy and BMW engineers could have found the solution to this problem. BMW unveiled the i-brand cars of the future. If you look closely, the headlights on the cars look nothing less than spectacular.

Laser headlights on the BMW i8 Concept
That is because they are neither LEDs nor are they Xenon. BMW has developed, or is rather developing new headlight systems that use a laser beam in place of conventional illumination hardware. The new laser headlights offer an almost parallel beam with an intensity 1,000 times greater than that of LED technology. The energy consumption is also halved from the infinitesimally small number to an even smaller value, to put it simply.
BMW has plans to launch the i-brand cars in the near future and by then, we could see further development in this field. Of course, laser could be a good idea when you need to see what’s coming the other way but, they do make the car look even better, for sure. I would like to have them on my car just for the way they look. They’re just so cool!
