News about Toyota doesn’t take too long to filter out, except perhaps only from behind the high gates of Toyota’s Bidadi plant off Bangalore, which like always remains as inaccessible as Bara-Lacha La is on a particularly icy winter. Someone working at ARAI has managed to snag a vital piece of information about Toyota’s latest diesel, the Corolla Diesel and a Team-Bhpian has wheedled it out of ARAI.

The juicy bit is the fact that the Corolla Altis Diesel is all set to entice buyers into signing on the dotted lines with a 21.42 KMPL mileage figure, that is certified by none other than ARAI(Automotive Research Association of India). This one figure gives us a startlingly large insight about what the Toyota Corolla Diesel might sport under the bonnet. We did some digging around and here’s what we managed to come up with. The Toyota Corolla in all probability, say 99.73%, could come with a 1.4 liter diesel engine.

The 1,364cc diesel engine in question will produce 89 Bhp at 3800 rpm and an impressive max twist figure of 205 Nm at a lowish 2800 rpm. No these figures certainly won’t make you go faster than say you neighbor on a Skoda Laura TSi, but the torquey diesel mill will certainly will help you scuttle ahead of most of the assorted Indian traffic while you revel in the luxurious rear seat of your Corolla Diesel. What’s more, your Toyota can go twice as far as your neighbor on the Laura TSi and you’ll be grinning ear to ear at the sticky fuel section of the petrol pump as your neighbor looks forlornly at the petrol pump. And no, we won’t even get into the after sales service part of the story.

Moving on, you may be wondering why we seem to be so convinced of the 1.4 D-4D common rail turbo diesel making it to the Toyota Corolla Altis’s engine bay? We are, because Toyota already has the same engine doing duty in the Spanish version of the Toyota Corolla Altis. On further analysis, we’ve also managed to find a close match between Toyota Spain’s claimed fuel efficiency of 4.6 Liters per 100 Kilometer, which at 21.73 KMPL is nail bitingly close to the ARAI claimed 21.42 KMPL for the Toyota Corolla Altis Diesel. Ah, what a startling coincidence.

We like our diesels fast, more than frugal. Hence, we would have loved the 2 Liter, turbocharged, intercooled D-4D diesel from the Toyota Innova adorning the Toyota Corolla Altis Diesel’s engine bay, but we have a couple of problems here. First, the bigger engine means more cost. Second, again more cost, as the 2 Liter D-4D necessitates the addition of an intercooler to keep the green thumbs happy, we mean, BS4 effect. So, that will add a few tens of a thousand to the Toyota Corolla Altis’s cost.

Toyota, as a manufacturer won’t like it and you as a prospective Toyota Corolla Altis Diesel buyer won’t like it too as you’d/should mainly be interested in a diesel Corolla to save enough dough to buy yourself that nice leather couch you’ve envied since last Diwali. So, there, these are great reasons as to why we’re pretty darn sure that Toyota Kirloskar Motor will outfit the Corolla Altis Diesel with the very quiet and refined, 1.4 Liter D-4D, this time, we’re 99.91 percent sure. The launch of the diesel Corolla Altis will happen sometime in late July or early August.

What we’re 100% sure about is the fact that indiancarsbikes is the first and only place you’d have read such a comprehensive analysis on the Toyota Corolla Altis Diesel. Thanks for stopping by.

The Corolla Altis will be launched in late July/early August, 2010. We say, worth the wait if you’re interested in the frugality of diesels.

    Cheers,

    Jay

    Dear Jay,

Good piece supported by some insightful research.

However, I’m dreading your prediction being true about a 1.4L Diesel in an Altis – what sense does that make in top end C segment car, esp against the Laura and the VW Diesels which are much more powerful?

Also – your deduction basis the 1.4L engine doing duty in the Spanish markets is a good observation. However, in the same market, the petrol version is sold with a 1.33L engine!! Guess we’ve gotten lucky with the petrol engine – hope the same happens with the diesel engine too, fingers crossed.
