GM realized it will be a while before they can churn out the 7th generation of Corvette’s so they decided to celebrate an anniversary and make a little more money than expected.

In 2003, the corvette celebrated its 50th birthday and was the only American sports car to do so. Now in 2010, it has been 50 years since the corvette first entered in the 24 hours of LeMans and to honor that and to ‘keep the tradition of transferring track to street technology’ in their madcap car ,Chevrolet revealed in March they would be producing a special edition Z06 Carbon Limited edition. And only 500 would be made.

The interior of the Z06 Carbon

Firstly let’s get down to the looks. In comparison to the ZR1, it looks lot less plasticky and the two colors available are Inferno Orange and the all-new Supersonic Blue. Now that is Bling! Other styling features include the black headlamps and mirrors, a ZR1-style body color spoiler, body color door handles, carbon fiber raised hood, and black carbon fiber rockers and splitter enhance the Z06’s dynamic design.

Inside with the usual leather mixed with suede stuff, the seat stitching is blue or orange to match the exterior color. (Ideally, you should wear a similar colored shirt or racing gear to look like the ‘cool corvette owner’). Of course, to show it really is a Corvette, there are emblems all over including on the steering wheel, sill plate and headrest.

Now, this ‘vette has Brembo carbon ceramic brakes with specific dark gray metallic calipers (first introduced on the ZR1), 19-inch 20-spoke black wheels with 20 inches for the rear wheels on Michelin PS2 tires. Other features include Magnetic Selective Ride Control for the first time on a Z06 and a special carbon pattern engine cover.

Jim Campbell, US Vice President for marketing at Chevrolet, said that the Corvette Z06 Carbon will surely be an instant collectible. And for this reason, the famous Barrett-Jackson auction in Palm Beach was the premiere venue to sell the first retail Z06 Carbon. On the third of April, the auction took place and the first Z06 Carbon went for…… $297,000!!! And guess what, the winner will be given a tour of the performance Build Center in Wixom, Michigan, where the performance engines in the Z06 and ZR1 are built.

Also, the proud owner will get to visit GM’s Corvette production facility in Bowling Green, Kentucky. On this site, he can apparently view the Corvette roll down the assembly line and take delivery of his car at the National Corvette Museum. So, it will be a day to look forward to for this man who splashed $297,000 to go to Kentucky? Blah! What an incentive that is. And driving something like that hot off an Assembly line? Really?

Anyhow, all said and done, this baby definitely looks dashing and according to Chevrolet, It is so damn good on the track that it can shave off around 3 seconds in a technical track like Laguna Seca! Now that is performance and a rush we all could use.
