Very quietly, the 2011 Land Rover Freelander 2 has been slipped into India with the Indian Land Rover website carrying all the details about the latest FreeLander2. Touted as the entry level Land Rover, for being the most inexpensive SUV in the Land Rover stable, the FreeLander 2 comes with minor aesthetic upgrades, of which the new grille upfront is the most prominent one, in addition to some major work under the bonnet.

The 2011 FreeLander 2 SD4 HSE will now come with a 2.2 Liter, 190 Bhp common rail turbodiesel engine that will join the 150 Bhp 2.2 liter diesel engine that the TD4 SE base variant features. Also, both the engines now have a torque bump up of 20 Nm due to a new turbocharger. Both the variants come with the 6 speed automatic gearbox as standard piece of kit with cruise control and terrain response.

The car is well appointed in the interiors with leather seats and plenty of gadgetry to keep you engaged, if you aren’t driving that is. The FreeLander 2 ticks all the boxes when it comes to safety kit, with cornering brake control being an extra feature thrown in along with knee airbags for the driver, which is a superb addition.GPS is standard and so is the audio system.

The fly in the ointment remains the price of INR 34,94 Lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi which makes the FreeLander 2 a pricey car although it is a very capable on-off roader loaded to the gills with gadgetry and two new engines that are a vast improvement over the previous 2 liter turbodiesel mill. To really set the cat amongst the pigeons, Land Rover India should begin CKD assembly of this SUV at the earliest. That, will be an all new ballgame.
