The all new 2012 BMW X3 Crossover SUV dumps the 3 liter, inline six engine for twin turbo power!

When BMW India launched the X3 Crossover in India last year, they skipped a petrol engine variant altogether for this SUV, which was available only with a 2 liter and three liter diesel engine options. Internationally though, the X3 was available with a 3 liter inline six petrol engine. Now, all that is set to change with BMW replacing the inline six naturally aspirated petrol motor with a twin turbo petrol unit.

Increasingly, BMW is shifting to turbo petrol power for better fuel economy and lower emissions. From now on, the N20 Twin Turbo 2 liter petrol engine will be what the BMW X3 Crossover will come with in the xDrive28i model. The N20 twin turbo petrol engine displaces 2 liters and produces 245 Bhp of peak power while peak torque is rated at 350 Nm. This four cylinder petrol engine will be mated to the 8 speed automatic gearbox that is a superbly responsive unit which also contributes to a higher fuel economy.

BMW claims a fuel economy figure of over 13 Kmpl for the new X3 with the N20 twin turbo petrol engine, which is quite exemplary. The top of the line N55 3 liter, 300 Bhp-410 Nm twin turbo petrol engine though, will continue to do duty on the top end petrol variant as a flagship model. With this move, BMW has now ensured that all engines of the X3, both petrol and diesel, will use turbocharging. Increasingly, turbo petrol engines are replacing naturally aspirated petrol engines cutting across automakers.

Turbocharging is a method of forced induction which enables higher power and torque output from a smaller engine displacement. The smaller engine with higher torque means fewer gear changes and lower petrol consumption. BMW has steadily been increasing its turbo petrol engine line up across its car models. While the Indian market does not have a single petrol engine on offer for the X3, the N20 twin turbo petrol engine could be a good option if BMW does decide to expand its X3 line up to include petrol variants.
