The first week of the new year has already proved to be quite a hectic one for the automotive media and now in the second week the focus has turned to the Detroit Motor Show. The North American International Auto Show opened its doors for the media today. The proceedings kicked-off with two hot launches including the new Mercedes-Benz SL-Class and the Ford Fusion. The Ford Fusion is primarily designed for the American market but as part of the Ford’s latest ‘One Ford’ policy the Mondeo will be replaced by the new car in 2013.

The 2013 Ford Fusion is designed along the lines of Ford’s new ‘Kinetic design’ philosophy and boasts a wide grille up front similar to that on the new Ford Focus. Like most Ford cars the new Mondeo promises to be a great handling car thanks to the MacPherson struts upfront and a multi-link setup towards the rear. Under the hood of the new car will go new generation of Ford EcoBoost engines with more power and low consumption and emissions. A couple of diesel engines will also be on offer.

A Fusion Hybrid is also on cards solely for the US market. A 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine is at the heart of the car coupled to an electric motor and a CVT automatic transmission. It is still not clear whether the Mondeo too will get new hybrid powertrain. That said, the new Mondeo does get the latest technologies from the safety catalogue.  Lane Keeping Assist, adaptive cruise control, Active Park Assist and a Blind Spot Information System are some of the active driver aides that will be on offer.
