2012 Mahindra Mini Xylo MPV could feature a 100 Bhp-240 Nm 1.5 Liter mHawk turbo diesel engine

The upcoming 2012 Mahindra Mini Xylo Mini MPV could feature a 1,493cc, three cylinder turbo diesel engine. The biggest revelation about this engine is the fact that the common rail motor could produce 100 Bhp of peak power and 240 Nm of peak torque, which under the hood of the Mini Xylo should endow this compact MPV with some stonking performance figures. Today, we have with us a document from Mahindra, listing the various advantages of the new 1.5 Liter mHawk engine, which is a downsized unit of the 2.2 Liter engine that the likes of the Scorpio, Xylo and XUV500 use.

This engine is one of the most powerful in Mahindra’s line up of diesel motors when it comes to specific output. Going forward, the engine could be used on more Mahindra products as it produces a serious amount of power and torque. Also, being a three cylinder unit, with claimed fuel economy of 18 Kmpl, the engine is fuel efficient as well. The engine, which will rev up to 4750 rpm, is also the lightest in Mahindra’s range of turbo diesel engines with a weight of 185 kilograms. The compact nature of the 1.5 Liter, 3 cylinder unit means that it can be used in a variety of cars, even hatchbacks with small engine bays.

If indeed the Mini Xylo gets the 1.5 liter mHawk engine with a 100 Bhp-240 Nm power and torque output, the compact MPV will be one of the most powerful in its class. The 7 seat MPV will come with a 2+3+2 layout with the last two seats being spring loaded jump seats. The length of the MPV measuring in at under 4 meters will mean that the Mini Xylo will qualify for lower excise duties. This means that the entry price of the Mini Xylo could be as little as INR 4-5 lakhs, thus competing with the B+ segment hatchbacks in the Indian car market.

This price is highly likely as anything higher would mean that the Mini Xylo could encroach upon the market of the best selling Bolero MUV, which is something Mahindra would want to avoid at all costs. The Mahindra Mini Xylo is expected to be launched in the festive season of Dusshera-Diwali, a time when offtake of cars is at the highest point of the year. The MPV will share its platform with the larger Xylo, along with styling elements. The big question though remains whether Mahindra will position the Mini Xylo as a compact MPV or a compact SUV, given that the latter segment is witnessing a flurry of activity with multiple launches lined up in the next few years.

Don’t the Scorpio and XUV500 run on ‘mHawk’ and not ‘mEagle’? Verification please.

    Karizmatic,

Eagle, er, Hawk eyes. You’re spot on and we’ve made corrections. Thank you.

    Cheers,
