2012 Mahindra Quanto Compact SUV: New uncamouflaged images surface
Just about a week ago, the uncamouflaged images of the Mahindra Quanto Compact SUV first surfaced even as the SUV was on a Ad shoot, ahead of its launch on the 20th of September, 2012. Now, we have four new images of the Quanto Compact SUV, in all its un-camouflaged glory. From what we’re seeing, it appears that Mahindra has already despatched the test/demo cars of the Quanto to dealerships across the country, to give eager car buyers the option of checking out the latest compact SUV in town before they make a buying decision.
The Quanto is expected to be Mahindra’s least priced SUV, with a price anticipated to be pegged between the INR 5-6 lakh mark for the base variants of the compact SUV. The Quanto is based on the full sized Xylo MPV and features a shortened body-on-ladder chassis of the latter. The compact SUV will be powered by Mahindra’s latest turbo diesel engine, in the form of the 1.5 Liter, twin turbo, three cylinder mCR1000 engine. This engine produces a peak power of 100 Bhp and a peak torque of 240 Nm, giving it one of the highest specific outputs in Mahindra’s diesel engine range, with a figure of 66.66 Bhp/Liter.
The Quanto compact SUV is expected to deliver an ARAI certified fuel efficiency number of 17 Kmpl, which puts it bang in the middle of the B+ diesel hatchbacks sold in India. Mahindra would be targeting B+ hatchback buyers to move up to the SUV class, with the Quanto compact SUV. The Quanto’s higher ground clearance, higher driving position and butch looks is what could swing sales in the compact SUV’s favor as all these traits are tailor made to take on the poor road surfaces of India. The compact SUV will come with a seven seat capacity, in a 2+3+2 layout, where the last two seats will be side facing units placed in the boot.

Top end variants of the Quanto, which incidentally will be available in C2, C4, C6 and C8 versions, is expected to come with safety equipment like ABS, EBD and Airbags. The 2012 Mahindra Quanto compact SUV’s launch comes at a time when the Indian festive season of Dusshera-Diwali is just around the corner. This is typically that time of the year when car sales are at their peak. So, a competitively price tag for the Quanto is what could put the bang back in the Indian car market, which has been stuck in the midst of a sales slowdown for quite some time now.
