2012 Mahindra Reva NXR Electric car could be priced between INR 5-6 lakhs

In the next few weeks, Mahindra-Reva will launch its latest electric car in India, in the form of the 2012 Reva NXR, which was showcased earlier this year at the Indian Auto Expo. The 2012 Reva NXR could be priced between INR 5 to 6 lakhs, as Mahindra’s Auto and Farm Equipment division president, Dr Pawan Goenka, has stated that the electric car would be 15 to 20% pricier than existing petrol hatchbacks in the Indian car market. Given that B+ segment hatchbacks like the Maruti Swift and the Ford Figo’s petrol variants begin at about INR 4 lakhs, the Reva NXR’s price could fall in between INR 5-6 lakhs.

The 2012 Reva NXR electric car’s main selling point is expected to be its running cost of about 50-60 paisa, which is much lower than the INR 3-4 it costs to run a diesel engined small car and much more lower than the INR 5-6 that it costs to run a petrol engined small car. This low running cost will help recoup the higher initial price of the Reva and make it a much more frugal option than a petrol or diesel hatchback. However, the Reva NXR is aimed at mainly city car buyers who do less than 100 Kms per day in the bigger Indian cities.

The Reva NXR electric car comes with a range of about 160 Kilometers per charge, which is quite an adequate range for most practical purposes within the city. Given that the electric car can seat 4 adults, it is quite a sensible for car buyers planning to use this car for city commutes. The Reva NXR uses lithium ion batteries to power its electric motor and these batteries can be charged at household wall sockets. The Reva NXR will come with a quick charge option, through which the lithium ion batteries of the car can be charged to 80% of their capacity in less than 3 hours.

This feature will be particularly useful as a 3 hour charge will give the Reva NXR a range of over 100 Kms. The Reva NXR can hit a top speed of 105 Kph, which along with the maximum torque available right from the word, will make the car quite peppy. This is a useful feature on city roads where instant acceleration makes more sense for getting ahead of traffic rather than a higher top speed, which can rarely be reached within the city. All said, the price of the Reva NXR will be the crucial factor that will prove to be make or break for the electric car.

Mahindra Reva has been quite successful developing many new technological developments in the electric car design in recent times, and these latest developments are more likely to offer all loyal Reva consumers an increased range, better acceleration, and a considerably smaller charging time.
