The 2012 Maruti Suzuki Ertiga MPV could be launched in March, soon after the Union Budget

The 2012 Maruti Suzuki Ertiga MPV is the most anticipated launch from the country’s largest automaker this year and sources say that Ertiga’s launch could happen soon after the Union Budget, which incidentally will be presented on the 16th of March. So the last two weeks of March 2012 could be when the Ertiga MPV bows in. Maruti Suzuki is said to be waiting for the budget to get a clear idea on the Indian government’s policy regarding the proposed moves of higher excise duty on diesel engines and higher CENVAT.

While the higher CENVAT would mean that all cars in India would become pricier by 2%, if the Indian government goes ahead with the proposed hike in excise duty on diesel engined cars, diesel cars could become a lot pricier than they are currently. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga MPV comes with both a diesel and a petrol engine, although the former is what is expected to constitute the majority of sales as the gap between petrol and diesel prices is very large, with diesel being the overwhelmingly cheaper option. So, a hike in CENVAT as well as excise duty on diesel cars could make the Ertiga Diesel MPV much more expensive.

The Ertiga will be the first diesel powered MPV from the Maruti Suzuki stable and gauging by the response this MPV got at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo, where it was first showcased, expect stiff demand if priced right. The Ertiga will be available in five seater and seven seater options. The MPV is based on the Marui Ritz platform and comes with high quality interiors that are expected to share many parts lie the dashboard and the door trimmings from the new Swift and the new Dzire compact sedan.
