Porsche has unveiled the next generation 911 Cabriolet. The 2012 convertible sports car is based on the 991 generation of the Porsche 911. The upcoming line-up Porsche sports car will be significantly lighter and faster than their predecessors. The engines powering the iconic automobiles have also been tweaked to produce more power without being too thirsty. The aim was also to reduce emissions from the cars. The body of the 2011 Porsche 911 Cabriolet has been redesigned to make as much slippery as possible.

Thus, by reducing the aerodynamic drag on the cars, Porsche has managed to reduce the fuel consumption of their cars. Also, to keep the weight down Porsche has used magnesium in place of standard steel. The Cabriolet version gets the same engines as the Coupe which was launched earlier. The 3.4 litre flat-six cylinder engine puts out 350 bhp @7500 rpm and 390 Nm @5600 rpm. Power drives the rear wheel via an all-new seven-speed manual transmission. Of course, you get an option of a dual-clutch automatic as well.

Having said that, the higher-spec Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet gets a 3.8 litre version of the flat-six cylinder engine bolted to its rear. The engine pumps out 400 bhp @7400 rpm and 440 torques @5600 rpm. Again, you get the option of a seven-speed stick shift or the Porsche Doppelkupplung or PDK for short. In this spec, the new convertible can reach speeds in excess of 300 kph, just. The car can accelerate from 0-100 kph in 4.5 sec with the dual-clutch automatic and does the same dash in 4.7 sec with the manual. Both Carrera and Carrera S version are set to debut on March 3rd with a possible showcase during the 2012 Geneva Motor show. That said, prices for the Cabriolet could be 30 percent more than the corresponding Coupe model.
