The Ssangyong Rexton W SUV, which is the third generation model of the Rexton SUV, has been spotted testing in India. While Pawan Goenka, President of Mahindra’s auto division, speaking to EconomicTimessays that the Rexton II, which is the second generation model will be launched in India, Mahindra testing the facelifted Rexton W, which is the third generation model, is confounding. with the latest sighting of the camouflaged model, one would hope that it is the new SUV version that makes it to Indian shores later this year and here’s why.

The Rexton W, that was first showcased at the 2012 Busan Motor Show comes with a brand new line up of turbo diesel engines along with various other creature comforts. While the second generation Rexton II SUV looks straight out of the nineties with staid styling that is out of place at this time and age, the Rexton W comes with facelifted looks that endow it with a dollop of modernity. Apart from the looks, the big change is the stuff under the hood. The older 2.7 Liter turbo diesel engine is now replaced by a smaller 2 liter unit called the e-XDi200.

The 2 liter. turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine with common rail direct injection puts out 154 Bhp-360 Nm. This engine features a variable geometry turbocharger with the standout feature being the prodigious low end torque of 190 Nm that it generates right from idle. The diesel engine is mated to an automatic transmission.  This engine also has a twin turbo variant which puts out a heady 225 Bhp-500 Nm. That said, the more powerful state of tune of this engine is expected to find application in a high performance Ssangyong sedan of the future.

Apart from the new engine, the Ssangyong Rexton W SUV comes with better interiors and a host of safety features and creature comforts like ABS, Airbags, Electronic Stability Program, Active Rollover Protection, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, a smart key system, cruise control and rain sensor wipers to name a few. Mahindra plans to assemble the 7 seater Rexton SUV through completely knocked down kits, and in 2013, the automaker will launch the Korando 5 seat SUV. With the launch of the Rexton impending in the next few months in India, one can only hope that Mahindra brings the updated W model to the country.
