2012 Volkswagen Jetta petrol 1.4 TSI launched at a price of INR 13.6 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi
Volkswagen India has launched the Jetta sedan’s petrol engined variant at a price of INR 13.6 lakhs for the entry level Trendline variant. The mid level Comfortline variant sells for INR 15.07 lakhs, both prices being ex-showroom Delhi figures. The 2012 Jetta ptrol sedan is powered by a 1.4 Liter TSI turbo petrol engine and direct injection. This engine generates a peak power of 122 Bhp while peak torque comes in at 200 Nm. The engine is mated to a six speed manual gearbox. The car will now form the entry level variant of the Jetta’s range in India.
The price at which the 2012 Jetta sedan is launched at represents stiff competition for the Skoda Laura TSI sedan, which begins from about 13 lakhs. However, the Skoda Laura, powered by the 1.8 Liter TSI engine is a much more powerful car that puts out 160 Bhp-250 Nm. So, the buyers of the petrol Jetta might buy it only for the Volkswagen badge on the bonnet and better interiors, which are a step up from the Skoda rather than for any semblance of fire breathing performance. With the pricing of the Jetta petrol, Volkswagen has clearly followed the time tested strategy of pricing similar Volkswagen cars above that of Skoda’s.
The 2012 Volkswagen Jetta sedan gets faux leather upholstery on the interiors, leatherette in VW speak. The car gets 16 inch alloy wheels on the outside. Coming to safety features, the Jetta gets the full range of bells and tinkles on the Comfortline variant, with Electronic Stability Program (ESP), ABS with brake assist, ASR & EDL, Hill hold control and a full complement of 6 airbags. The 2012 Jetta sedan will be sold at VW showrooms across India from the 1st of July and bookings for the car are open currently.
The Volkswagen Jetta petrol has been launched at a time when the bottom has clearly fallen off petrol car sales in India. So, the main intent of this car, apart from mopping up a little extra in terms of volumes, will be to attract more customers to Volkswagen showrooms, due to the lower price tag. The real sales puller will continue to be the 2 Liter TDI turbo diesel engined version of the Jetta sedan. The diesel engine, which produces 140 Bhp of peak power and 320 Nm of peak torque, comes with a both a six speed manual as well as a DSG gearbox.
